Style Profile - Nutthaya - Fashion Student - Bangkok

Nutthaya is a 19 year old fashion student from Bangkok. She is in the second year at Chulalongkorn University studying Textiles & Fashion. Street Style Planet Earth caught up with her to chat about Fashion, Style and Youth Culture in Bangkok.

How are the studies going?

It's great to have the chance to create and communicate my thoughts and ideas into designs.

Any downsides?

I haven't learned so much about fashion in class but have had to take some classes that I don't think are necessary. I'm learning more about fashion through my own experiences.

Do you have any plans on what you will do after graduating ?

Looking for a job and collaborating with others. If possible, I would like to study in London at Central Saint Martins.

Any long term plans or dreams?

Absolutely no idea about my future yet. I still feel lost.

How would you describe your personal style?

Casual with style!

Any favourite Thai brands / designers?

Stuck on Stupid and Boyis.

Favourite International designers / brands?

Vetements, Mugler, Mowalola.

Do you keep an eye on the youth fashion scenes of any other Asian Countries? Which Asian city do you feel has the most exciting fashion scene?

I know I’m biased but I think youth culture in Bangkok is the most interesting one to keep an eye on.

Since you first became interested in fashion & style, how do you see Thai Youth around you interacting with fashion?

I think young kids nowadays are more concerned about their appearance than ever before. Even kids in junior high school are wearing stylish & fashionable clothes. Thailand also has a rapidly growing number of youth fashion brands. I feel like the increase in youth culture awareness and rise and expansion of youthful fashion brands are growing hand in hand.

Climate concern has been a big part of 2019 - How do you think this will affect fashion over 2020?

People seem a little too dependent on fast fashion which obviously impacts on climate problems. Hopefully people will become more aware and think harder before they buy things and look for more sustainable clothes.

Have you ever been to Bangkok's Elle Fashion Week?

I went with my friends as we were all studying fashion design. It was a great experience.

They seem to be attracting more youthful and youth oriented designers but it would be great to see more. I hope they can develop a platform that can assist young Thai designers soon.

Where did your interest in fashion come from?

The first moment that drew me into the fashion world was when I got a chance to see a fashion show in Bangkok which featured my favourite model of the time - Irene Kim. That moment really inspired my love for fashion!

Who are your fashion inspirations / influences?

Right now, I don't feel like a specific person has an impact on my choice of clothing. I just wear things that I feel comfortable with. But as a kid when I was first interested in fashion I used to follow the styles of supermodels like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Closer to home, Ive been following Ms Shangrila since she was a student. She's such an inspiring person. (*Ms Shangrila was recently interviewed for SSPE.)

Where do you look for fashion ideas?

I get inspiration from Instagram a lot as it’s the fastest way to see things online. You can see influences from around the word. But I still enjoy print media and read i-D and Dazed magazines to see what's going on.

Other than style and fashion, what are your other interests?

I enjoy philosophy, photography and books.

Do you have any secret or favourite places to find clothes in Bangkok?

The Shinjuku outlet, it’s a second-hand store that you can by 3 items of clothing for just 100 THB (£2.50 / $3.30 / 3 Euro)

Have you ever tried to make your own clothes? Or do you customise any vintage finds?

I usually wear a lot of my mom's clothes and just adapt them to suit my style. Before I went to University I used to design styles based on vintage clothes.

Where do you like to hang out in Bangkok?

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)

Bangkok Screening Room (Movies)

Dao Coffee

Red Rose Jazz Bar

Kinokuniya (Book store)

Hopes and dreams for 2020?

Living my life to the fullest and making the world a better place!
